The World Health Organisation labels mobile phones as possibly carcinogenic

When it comes to “carcinogenic”, we abide by the principle “better safe than sorry”

In 2011, a team of 31 scientists from 14 different countries examined over 250 pieces of independent research. They concluded:

  • Upped the classification of smartphones to Category 2B – “Possibly Carcinogenic”
  • The 2B classification puts smartphones are in the same category as: lead, engine exhaust, and pesticides
  • 40% increased risk overall for gliomas (cancer) for heavy smartphone users
  • A “heavy smartphone user” constituted 30 minutes a day, over a 10 year period

Acclaimed international scientists appeal the UN and WHO on EMR (electromagnetic radiation) risk

WHO the (EM) F is ignoring these guys?!

In May 2015, more than 190 scientists from 39 countries called on the U.N and WHO for greater protection against non-ionising radiation which includes microwaves and smartphones. The Appeal was sent to his Excellency Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary- General of the United Nations; Honourable Dr. Margarate Chan, Director- General of the World Health Organisation and U.N Member States.

The Appeal primarily calls for:

  • Protection of children and pregnant women from EMF;
  • Make EMF standards more protective;
  • Encourage manufacturers to develop safer technology;
  • Inform the public about the potential health risks from EMF and teach people how to reduce risks;
  • Fund training and research on EMF that is independent of industry and mandate industry cooperation with researchers
  • Encourage the media to disclose experts’ financial relationships with industry when citing their opinions regarding the safety of EMF-emitting technologies.

Dr. Sadetzki pairs parotid gland cancer with mobile phone use

Phones, cheek cancer, coincidence? We think not.

Studies conducted by Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, a physician, epidemiologist, and lecturer at Tel Aviv University, report strong correlations between the development of parotid gland cancer and prolonged smartphone use.

*Translation: The parotid gland is a salivary gland located near your cheek. i.e. near where your smartphone is positioned when speaking.

Dr. Sadetzki, testified in a 2009 US Senate Hearing that smartphones were identified as a contributor to salivary gland tumors. The report states that your risk of getting a parotid tumor on the same side of your head as you hold your phone increases by:

  • 34% if you are a regular smartphone user and have used a smartphone for 5 years
  • 58% if you had more than about 5,500 calls in your lifetime
  • 47% if you have used a smartphone for 5 years or more and have had more than 5,479 calls in your life-time
  • 50% if you have used a smartphone for 5 years or more and have spoken on the phone for more than 266.3 hours
  • 81% if you have made more than 18,996 calls in your life-time
  • 96% if you have a life-time exposure of more than 1,035 hours

The Interphone Study shows correlation between smartphone use and gliomas

They always save the best for Appendix 2

The Interphone study, the largest (5,117 brain tumor cases) and most expensive ($25 million dollars) study on mobile phones and brain tumors, is often referenced as proof that there is no correlation between smartphone use and cancer. However, the publication of Appendix 2 (as a separate report with zero media attention) shows a startling:

  • 68% increased risk of developing gliomas for those who used a mobile phone for as little as 2-4 years
  • 118% increased risk of glioma for those who used a mobile phone for 10+ years
  • 82% increased risk of glioma for those who used a mobile phone for more than 1640 hours compared with regular users

Widely identified issues with the Interphone Study:

  • In the Interphone Study, a regular smartphone user is defined as anyone who made at least one call on their smartphone each week for at least 6 months
  • Brain tumors take decades to develop – yet only a small fraction (less than 10%) of those people in this study used smartphones for more than 10 years
  • Participants were between the ages of 30-59. Younger and more vulnerable participants were excluded
  • Several authors identified conflicts of interests and associations with the wireless industry
  • Elizabeth Cardis, head of the Interphone Study, was quoted saying:
    “In my personal opinion, I think we have a number of elements that suggest a possible increased risk among the heaviest users, and because the heaviest users in our study are considered the low users today, I think that’s something of concern”
